Cruising Environmental Graffiti today, I came across one of the coolest online ideas I’ve ever seen: an auto scrolling, life size picture of a blue whale. Literally, life size. The eye fills up most of my monitor.

In addition to just being awesome, this image will go a long way towards the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society’s goal of protecting blue whales. When I see a picture of a blue whale on TV (even on my parents’ 52 inch), I can’t really appreciate just how massive these animals are. They’re just another distant creature that I can’t relate to. This is the first time that I’ve ever been able to experience the reality of just how big they are, and having that sense of scale lends a huge amount of gravity to their cause. I would consider myself an environmentalist, but after seeing only a fraction of the whale, I want to protect them even more.

The other part of the page that is a stroke of brilliance is the “close” button in the upper left. If you click on it, some new text pops up that says “Think before you close this window. This might be the last life size whale you will ever see.” And like any good marketing placement, there’s also a call to action, encouraging people to visit stopbloodywhaling.org .

That’s a powerful message. Having never seen a blue whale before, might this really be the closest that I ever get to one?

Like my last post about making certain activities more fun to encourage changes in behavior (i.e. taking the stairs), can we encourage people to take action simply by giving them the appropriate scale? As a marketing agency for renewable energy companies, I think that it’s part of our job to help bring the right scale to the need for renewable and clean energy, just like WDCS did for the blue whale.
