The captains' thoughts on all things branding, design, viral, video, and web. Join the conversation!

By Ted Page, Captains of Industry

Our Captains hats are off today for Bettina Hein of start-up Pixability in Cambridge, Massachusetts, featured in today’s Boston Globe article.

Pixability arms small businesses with flip cams, and lets them upload their raw video files that Pixability has edited for them by their network of freelancers. It’s a smart business model and we hope it takes off big time. Now, you might wonder if a video production company like Captains of Industry would feel threatened by a start-up that makes it easy and really cheap to make decent web videos. Not at all. We’re happy that the idea of web video for business purposes is finally going mainstream (as opposed to videos of cats playing the piano, which we also like).   As more and more marketers understand that having video on their websites is imperative,  the need for higher end productions with great storytelling is increasing as well – and Captains of Industry is more than happy to fill this niche. We’ve seen a significant increase in new video production business, and there is no end in sight to this trend.

As the democratization of web video gathers steam, our vote is for greater use of this exciting medium for every business purpose and budget range.  Everyone will win as a result – especially marketers.

Thanks, Ted, for the write up! Indeed, we’re seeing a big increase in web video production on all fronts.

Pixability’s mission is to open up the market for the 95% of small and medium-sized companies that never thought they could tell their story with video.

I’ve heard great things about Captains of Industry – I hope we meet in person soon.

    Best,
    Bettina

    Bettina,

Thanks for your post. I remember back when my partner and I first started (around 97). We approached an editor at Boston.com and tried to convince them to put video on their site, like video funnies. Her response: “Why would I ever want a video on our site?” It was a real Ken Olsen moment. I’m glad things have changed!
