The captains' thoughts on all things branding, design, viral, video, and web. Join the conversation!

By Lindsey Campbell, Captains of Industry

Hello Captains’ Readers,

Here’s your Daily Deal:

1. Chillin’ Like a Villain With Umbra

Eyes lid spasms. Stiff neck. Constant headache. If any of these symptoms sound familiar, it’s likely you’ve got a case of the “I’m-super-stressed-out-blues.” But lucky for you, that quirky, loveable, and environmentally obsessed red head from Grist has provided us with a list of ways to say goodbye to twitchy eyelids and hello to relaxation while still being environmentally conscious.

2. It’s Not Nice to Fake It

If there’s anything AdRants hates more than a bad ad, it’s a bad fake ad. According to the site, Young & Rubicam France created a “fake” viral video for Speed Stick. Not only does the video have a less than zero chance of going viral (you can’t MAKE something go viral, people. It just DOES), but it also offended the people at AdRants. Which is really something you don’t want to do.

3. If People Aren’t Drinking Your Beer, Make It Look Like A Vortex

Wouldn’t it be cool if your beer flowed out of the bottle like a vortex? Well, according to 70% of consumers, that one little detail could be the deciding factor between buying a 30, er…I mean a six-pack of Miller as opposed to Bud. According to Ted Mininni of MarketingProfs, packaging is in, and advertising is out. Apparently most consumers make most of their purchasing decisions while they’re standing at the shelf. And if someone actually engages with the packaging as they use the product, well that’s what I’d like to call the foam on the draft beer of marketing.

4. When David Meerman Scott Challenges You To Do Something, You Do It.

Pheobe Dubar, who works on Marketing and Tourism Development for Melbourne Australia’s Federation Square, was challenged by Scott back in September to “do something clever” to market the many restaurants located in the area.  Well Dubar did get people talking about Fed Square. And cooking, too.  To market all of the delicious restaurants and bars, Dubar decided to create an e-cookbook called, “The Fed Square Cookbook” which showcases feature dishes from all the restaurants located in Fed Square. So not only did Dubar get Aussies interested in new restaurants, but she got people talking and sharing information. Which is what marketing is all about.

5. Hurry Up and Order and Get Out of My Life!

You think marketing is hard? Have you ever worked 3 doubles in 100-degree weather while people demand their food and beverages be delivered in a timely and pleasant manner? Well, I have. And it isn’t pretty. So in honor of National Stress Awareness Day, and all the stress-inducing jobs out there, I’ve decided to post a clip from Comedy Central about one of the most stressful jobs, in my humble opinion, there is: Waitressing. So take a load off. Roll your kinked neck and rub those bleary eyes. It’s Friday. Time to laugh a little.

Until we meet again,

Lindsey
