Hey Captains’ Readers,

Here’s your Monday Deal:

1. How do you like it shaved?

After years of starring clean-cut, towel-clad guys who seductively rub their shaven faces with knowing smiles, Gillette has finally decided to mix it up a bit. In their latest web video, the razor and shave gel company features women, and only women, to promote the Gillette Fusion Pro Glide Razor, and here’s the kicker: Gillette interviewed women of all shapes, colors and sizes (some clothed, some not), and asked them how they like “it” shaved. The answers ranged from “just a little patch” to “I like it completely shaven. When it’s smooth like that, I can’t keep my hands off it.” Ow, ow! The video comes off as risqué, but I think it’s smart. After all, it’s us women that have to kiss those hairy faces. It’s about time men asked us what our manscaping preferences are.

2. Tomato, Toe-mat-o, Potato, Pa-ta-toe

Everyone needs a good strong name. After all, it says a lot about who you are, where you come from and what you’re like. Look at Oprah, Ozzy or even Elvis. Would he have been “The King of Rock n’ Roll” if his name had been Bob? Probably not (no offense to all the Bobs out there). Which is why when it comes to content marketing, Roy Young of MarketingProfs thinks we marketers need to settle, once and for all, on a name for our pride and joy, content marketing. Or brand journalism. Or maybe lead generation? Well, either way, we need to all pick a name and stick with it.

According to Young, the role of a marketer has constantly changed throughout the years. At the beginning, marketers were considered television producers. Then, when the Internet was born, we were website publishers. Now, with the rise of blogs, we’re content creators. While there’s no doubt that great content is effective when it comes to marketing a product, a consistent name for what we do will allow others to recognize it as a valued profession. That way, when you say you’re a Content Marketing Manager, people won’t ask you what that entails, they’ll just know.

After all, I’m sure “The King” didn’t need to explain his job description.

3.  Semper Cheeseimus

I thought all Frito Lay had up their sleeve for Cheetos was a cheesy (no pun intended) cartoon tiger that could nosegrind his skateboard with the best of ‘em. But recently, Cheetos rocked my marketing world with their new interactive takeover game, Battle of the Cheetos. When you first click the link to the site, your webpage fades out, and Captain Cheeto (the infamous tiger) appears. He’s decked out in a bandolier, black army beret and a distinguished looking goatee—a look I didn’t think the skate rat could rock. After a few solemn nods from Captain Cheeto, a prompt pops up and asks you to enlist in the Cheeto army. But first, you have to pick a side—puffy or crunchy? I’ve always been pro-crunchy, so enlist I did. After you pledge your allegiance to your favorite snack food, you must create your army’s flag and choose a name. Mine was, the “Crunch Crusaders” (beat that, puffs!). Once you’ve established yourself in the force, Captain Cheeto sends you a solute, and you’re off to battle. You can do everything from taunt your opponents via chat, to blowing them into smithereens with a cannon. Not only has Cheetos stepped it up, but they’ve taken the battle between those who prefer puffy cheese snacks to crunchy cheese snacks to a whole new level. Hail to the cheese!

If you’re digging the web content in the Deal, and you think they’d work for your company, check out the Captains’ Web Content Portfolio.

Until tomorrow,

Captain Lindsey
