The captains' thoughts on all things branding, design, viral, video, and web. Join the conversation!

Hey Captains’ Readers,

You’re almost there. Friday’s in sight. Until then, soak in your Thursday Deal:

1. Superblogs can save the world

As a daily blogger, Jade Simms understands the power and might of social media. So she figured that if she could connect with thousands of “crafters” (i.e. people who love to make and create all different kinds of arts and crafts) on a regular basis, she could probably just as easily help some people. After kicking around a few ideas with her fellow crafting comrades, Simms created Craft Hope, a global blog that spreads its message of crafting to charities by linking to specific causes. What have these crafty ladies done for others? Well, after the earthquake in Haiti a few months ago, they created an online shop and had artists from all over the world donate handmade clothing. One hundred percent of the proceeds went to Doctors Without Borders in Haiti, and they didn’t just raise a few nickels and dimes. Craft Hope earned a whopping $33,000. Simms explains that it all happened because “we created a button for people to put on their websites.” Imagine what else could be done for your business, and for others, with just the click of one little button?

2.  All hail the Tampon Queen

Listen, I love a handy and absorbent tampon as much as the next girl. In fact, I’ll even get down on my hands and knees and praise the ancient Egyptians for creating the very first tampon. But I will not, now or ever, become the president of a tampon fan club. Nope. Not happening. According to AdRants, Max Le Tampax, a French tampon campaign, is currently airing a series of videos about Max and his Tampax friends. The purpose? They’re looking to recruit a leader for their tampon fan club. What are the requirements to even become the president of cotton and string? A purse full of tampons and a heavy flow? This is just too weird for words.

3. Yet another alternate life for the Lost characters

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be spending this Sunday evening with your eyeballs glued to your TV. The final episode of Lost will be airing, and there’s a faint possibility that J.J. Abrams will finally let us devout Losties in on what in the heck is happening on that island—however after 6 seasons of more questions than answers, I’m not holding my breath. But now that it’s all coming to a bittersweet end, io9.com is actually sharing a few secrets.

Can you imagine (yet another) alternative world where Yunjin Kim (Sun) isn’t Jin’s loving wife, but Kate Austin, outlaw on the run? Or what if Dominic Monaghan (Charlie) didn’t play a drug abusing, washed up rock star, but the sweet talking, nickname-loving con man Sawyer? And by far the most outlandish, could you fathom the diabolical and calculating character on the show (Ben) being the loyal but lovable Hurley? Well according to their recently released audition tapes, the Lost saga could have had an entirely different spin if the actors got to play the characters they originally tried out for. Check out your favorite cast member trying on a different skin back in 2004.

Boom.

Bad Robot!

Until tomorrow,

Captain Lindsey
