I hope you’re all ready for Memorial Day weekend!  I know MD is typically known for beers, BBQ and the beach, but try to remember while your chowing down on burgers and throwing back some brewskis that the day is really for those who’ve died in our nation’s service. They’re the ones who make it all possible. So thank you!

1. Solar panels go great with white

A common issue people have when they’re considering solar is the actual look of the panels themselves. Most homeowners take great pride in their house’s appearance, and they feel that 21st century technology looks all wrong on a 17th century homestead. While solar companies are doing their best to create a panel that is both functional and attractive, there are still owners who are hesitant to break their motif for the sake of renewable energy. But recently, the owner of one of the oldest houses in the United States declared that he is VERY interested in installing solar. That’s right, President Barack Obama wants to install solar panels on his 210-year-old digs.

It all started when Solar Fred of Unthink Solar began pitching the idea of solar energy to the White House. He even got companies like Sungevity to donate labor and materials to make the idea become a reality. Why are these solar experts going to so much effort to save the president some cash? Because it’ll show other trigger-shy homeowners that going solar won’t just save money and energy, but it’ll also help build the American economy. In fact, in an ABC News World Report, President Obama explains that he wants to boost American leadership in the solar industry after statistics showed a 35% drop in the past 15 years. So if the president can bite the bullet and embrace the look of solar technology, so can other homeowners throughout the United States.

2. Don’t make your content followers feel like you’re just not that into them

Maintaining a content project like a blog, e-newsletter, website or social media page, takes time and constant effort. Rather than thinking of your company blog or website as a one-shot deal, only to be set up and used at your leisure, think of it as you would a plant, a puppy, or even a romantic relationship. They need daily care and attention. They need to be watered and fed. And not to get all mushy on you, but they need love. There’s really nothing worse than randomly receiving an update from a blog you haven’t heard from in months. Not only does it make the company look tired, but it makes the content follower feel like their deadbeat boyfriend is back to make amends after months of absence. Yuck. Readers need to have constant assurances that they are loved and appreciated (I love you Captains’ readers!). How do you do this? Well, Michele Linn of MarketingProfs has four tips for you to follow for a healthy follower-creator relationship.  Check them out:

Start small.
Do you think you want to blog? Instead of setting up your own blog and getting a few posts out there, try guest posting on other blogs.

Realize that every project has an opportunity cost.
If you want to blog, that’s great! But recognize that it’s quite a time commitment, and you’ll likely have to give up doing something else.

Enlist the help of others.
One of the best ways to maintain a project such as a blog is to work with others.

Commit.
Here’s the most important thing: Once you decide you are going to do something, quite simply, you need to do it–and do it consistently.

3. You ain’t cool, unless you poop your pants.
