Lindsey’s Daily Deal: Crayola 2.0, Picking Up the Damn Box, Shaqtastic and Anti-Anti-Gay Marriage
By Lindsey Campbell, Captains of Industry
Hey Captains’ readers,
Here’s your Tuesday Deal:
1. Crayola 2.0
I was once an avid colorer. It started with coloring books, but eventually I graduated to creating my own masterpieces. Lindsey with Mom and Dad. Lindsey with a dog. Lindsey in the pool. You get the idea. But once the second grade hit and I learned the exotic art of cursive writing, it was all over for me. Crayons were baby toys, and I was a hotshot 7-year old. So I traded in my 24-pack of Crayolas for some big-kid pencils and thus my love affair with coloring ended. But fortunately for the youngsters of today, they don’t have to say goodbye to Crayola once they hit grade two. They can graduate to “Liv Crayola.”
Recently, the Crayola Company did some research and found out that “teenage girls felt the Crayola brand left them as they grew up, not the other way around.” So in an effort to grow with their target market, Crayola has recently launched a new line of products, which includes everything from binders and notebooks to pens, pencils and stationery. The best part? Crayola has a program on their website that lets girls create their own designs so they can order their own brand of school supplies. If I were still a student of Gallagher Middle School, I would totally be practicing my design skills over the summer so I could have the coolest notebooks next September. Yeah, I was that kid.
2. Pick up the damn box!
In a 2-minute web video by Crispin Porter, Alex Bogusky breaks down why some people completely dismiss the idea of global warming. He explains that in the sixties and seventies, pollution was a hot topic. And with the help of one crying Indian in a commercial, people began to understand the implications of littering and started cleaning up. But today’s problem isn’t something you can see lying on the ground. Carbon is an invisible pollution that is slowly wreaking havoc on our planet. Bogusky believes that this is why it’s harder for people to make an effort to be green these days. So he asks viewers to keep the same mindset they’ve had for decades: pollution bad, clean good. Debates, fights, and science aside, no one can argue with that logic.
3. Shaqtastic
If you were worried about Shaq after the Cavaliers lost in the NBA Playoffs, don’t be. He’s got plenty of moneymaking content ideas that will definitely take him back to the top. Check out Digitas’s promo for the third annual Digital Content NewFront Event. My favorite? Shaqula. Rar!
4. Anti-Anti-Gay Marriage
To get the 44% of Californians who don’t think gay people should be able to legally get married see the light, directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon created a video PSA starring Justin Long, Mike White, Tom Arnold and Nora Dunn. The video brilliantly uses any mom’s favorite, reverse psychology, to explain to anti- gay marriage supporters that if you want gay people to understand the importance of marriage, all you have to do is let them get hitched. It won’t be long until they see that after you cut the cake, there’s also bickering, mid-section girth, and fights over where to put your penis surfboard.
Until tomorrow,
Captain Lindsey
