Captains of Industry is NOT your grandfather's ad agency.

Our History

Captains of Industry® began as a freelance writing service in 1992, started by Ted Page, a copywriter who had worked previously at McCann-Erickson in NY, and Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge, MA. In 1996, Page began sharing office space with Fred Surr, a top television producer in the Boston area. Page and Surr saw early on the extraordinary potential of video on the web, and soon brought their two companies together to form the Captains of Industry of today – a strategic marketing communications agency with in-house video production capabilities. Captains of Industry pioneered some the first ‘websodes’ ever made (ADC, a large cable TV company), and went on to create award winning work with the likes of John Cleese that has been seen by millions.

Today, Captains of Industry brings together expertise in a range of areas, including marketing communications such as logo development, video production, and web and print graphic design for top renewable energy companies, and viral marketing for Fortune 500 companies.

Many people ask, “How did you come up with the name?”  After leaving the corporate world, Page was determined to start a company and felt he needed a memorable name. He went to bed thinking about names, and woke up in the morning with the answer: “Captains of Industry!”  The name is yet another example of the power of dreams and the capacity of our minds to be creative when we are unconscious.
